Purists stay away from electric motorcycles because they lack the instinctive experience of riding, including the joy of shifting gears. But this may change soon.
Soriano Motori is an Italian brand with French descent. It has refurbished three motorcycles with modern incarnations. These quirky electric bikes are called Giaguaro V1S, V1R and V1 Gara, and are everything you would expect from a premium electric motorcycle, and some.
The highlight of the Giaguaro bicycle is its unique power system. These bicycles do not use a hub motor, or even a traditional BLDC motor, but a dual motor configuration placed horizontally in the chassis, just like the horizontally opposed engine of BMW Motorrad. The motor outputs 72kW (97PS) in the V1S model and 60kW (81.5PS) in the basic specification V1R. At 155Nm, the torque output of the two is the same. Soriano paired this engine with a 5-speed transmission and a reverse gear. Yes, these Italian bicycles are equipped with gearboxes with hydraulic clutches.
Soriano designed a complex liquid cooling system to keep the motor running at an optimal temperature. It includes four radiators-one for the two motors and the other two for the corresponding inverters. These inverters also have heat sinks to further aid cooling. Finally, the electric pump pushes the coolant to another external radiator located under the seat.
Giaguaro's motor is paired with a new generation of high-density lithium-ion batteries and capacitors, and the actual cruising range is said to be up to 289 kilometers. Soriano’s 3.5kW power charger requires five hours to charge the battery, but with a 20kW charger, the charging time can be reduced to less than one hour.
There is an equally complex control unit to supplement the power unit. The management system independently controls the motors. Even if one motor fails, the bicycle can run on a single motor. Any failure, including a single battery, can be detected and then displayed on the unique 8-inch touch screen instrument console.
Soriano packs all these technologies in an equally attractive (or quirky) package. The Giaguaro electric motorcycle uses a unique aluminum frame, suspended on the front aluminum beam suspension, with a stroke of 110 mm and a link-type single shock absorber with a stroke of 125 mm. In terms of braking, Soriano provides dual 320mm disc brakes and four-cylinder calipers at the front, and a 260mm disc brake with two-cylinder calipers at the rear. This is used in conjunction with OZ Racing's lightweight alloy wheels.
The Soriano Giaguaro V1R is priced at 25,500 euros (2,156 million rupees), while the V1S is priced at 30,500 euros (2,578 million rupees). Then, there is the V1 Gara, which sells for up to Rs 2.748 million.
Needless to say, these bicycles will not add luster to India. But the closest thing to an electric superbike is the Ultraviolette F77, which may make its debut in March 2022.
