Tesla Megapacks will store electricity for 50MW/75MWh Wallgrove batteries in New South Wales (NSW).
Transgrid subsidiary Lumea will build Wallgrove batteries in western Sydney. Tesla Megapacks will enable Wallgrove batteries to provide "synthetic inertia" to the local grid. According to Renew Economy, the large battery will also run in virtual machine mode.
Wallgrove batteries can reduce the grid's need for aging coal and natural gas power plants with synthetic inertia. In fact, as New South Wales prepares to retire its coal fleet, the Wallgrove battery pack is the first of more than 10 large battery packs to be built in New South Wales.
Liddell's AGL, Sunraysia and Lismore's Maoneng, and Eraring's Origin have already proposed other large batteries. Neoen, who owns Hornsdale Power Reserve and Victoria Big Battery, also proposed some projects in New South Wales. Hornsdale Power Reserve and Victoria Big Battery both use Tesla Megapacks.
Due to strong demand, Tesla Megapacks will be sold out by the end of next year. In its update letter for the third quarter of 2021, Tesla reported that its energy deployment has increased, mainly due to Megapack deployment. Tesla is building a Megapack factory to increase its production capacity and address the high demand for its battery storage units.
"The energy storage deployment in the third quarter increased by 71% year-on-year, mainly driven by strong Megapack deployment. We recently announced a new Megapack plant with a capacity of 40 GWh, compared to the total Megapack deployment of 3 GWh in the past 12 months . We are very excited about the broader potential of this product," Tesla wrote in its update letter.
