Tesla announced more detailed pricing for its commercial and utility-scale energy storage product Megapack.

It starts at US$1 million, which may sound high, but it is actually a bargain in the field of large-scale energy storage.

Almost two years ago, Tesla launched the Megapack. This is Tesla's third stationary energy storage product after Powerwall and Powerpack.

A single Megapack unit is a container-sized 3 MWh battery system with integrated modules, inverters and thermal system.

With larger size and integrated power electronics, Tesla claims that the energy density of the Megapack is 60% higher than that of its Powerpack.

It can also be installed on site and transported in containers.

Although the exact price of Megapack has not been publicly released, we know that Tesla’s pricing is competitive because the product is very popular among power companies.

We reported on large-scale projects using the Tesla Megapack, such as the battery project to replace peak natural gas in Ventura County and the 1 GWh large-scale project in Northern California.

Last week, Tesla quietly launched a new online configurator for Megapack, which obviously did not attract people’s attention until I stumbled upon it while looking for other things today.

The current price of the configurator will vary based on the number of Megapacks you order and install:

It shows that the price of a single Tesla Megapack is $1,235,890, but this is not a common use case for the product.

Tesla actually uses the default number of 10 Megapacks in the configurator.

Tesla listed the price of 10 Megapacks at $9,999,290, which resulted in a price of $327.87 per kilowatt hour.

However, this is not an accurate representation of the cost of the Tesla battery, as it also includes a 7.6 MW power inverter and installation.

Tesla described the Megapack installation process:

As you order more Megapacks, the price per kilowatt hour will drop. 100 Megapacks reduce the cost to around US$280 per kWh.

The configurator also shows the annual maintenance cost, which is increasing at a rate of 2% per year.

Tesla also provided rough delivery schedules for Megapack units in different markets. In California, Tesla believes it can deliver the new Megapack project as soon as next year. Most other markets will have to wait until at least 2023 to get huge battery cells.
