Ingeteam Inc., an inverter manufacturer, said it provided battery inverters for the Johanna 1 and 2 energy storage project in Santa Ana, California, which was put into use in October. The 20MW/80MWh grid-connected project is owned and operated by Hecate Energy and constructed by Mitsubishi Electric Power.

The energy storage project was conceptualized as a pilot project for Southern California Edison's preferred resource. The Southern California Edison Company and the Clean Energy Alliance have both signed contracts for the use of battery energy.

Johanna ESS is equipped with LFP battery, which can accumulate energy for 4 hours. It is part of a project to integrate renewable energy into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) grid to verify distributed energy (DER) capacity assumptions, study grid requirements, and develop technical expertise for large-scale DER implementation. This multi-year study will determine whether clean distributed energy can offset the growing power demand in central Orange County.

For this project, Ingeteam provided 20 INGECON SUN STORAGE 1245TL U B480 inverters. These inverters include 1,500Vdc technology and will develop grid support functions such as frequency regulation.

The Johanna plant uses lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry (commonly referred to as LFP). Mitsubishi Electric Americas will provide services for the facility under a 10-year service agreement.
